Business and Management Studies
Cardiff Business School was ranked 6th in the UK for the quality of its research in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). Only ‘Golden Triangle’ (Oxbridge and London) schools are placed higher among more than 100 business schools in the UK. With this result, Cardiff becomes one of only two business schools in the UK to be ranked in the top ten in each of the Government’s five assessment exercises since 1992. Our research environment is rated the highest in the UK. From critical analyses of economic policy in the aftermath of the global financial crisis to ensuring fair compensation for accident victims, Cardiff Business School’s innovative and multidisciplinary research addresses the grand challenges facing business and organisations.
|About the REF|
Cardiff Business School’s researchers produce around 550 research outputs each year. Independent assessment by the Times Higher put the Business School in the UK Top Ten for combined Business & Management and Economics citations per paper over the period 2000-10.
Our research is organised around five sections: Accounting and Finance, Economics, Human Resource Management, Logistics and Operations Management, and Marketing and Strategy.
We are home to a number of research groups and our academics play key roles in a number of cross-University institutes and centres, including the Welsh Institute for Social and Economic Research Methods and Data (WISERD), the Public Policy Institute for Wales and the Sustainable Places Institute (PLACE).
Five key features give us a distinctive character:
- focus on innovative theoretical and conceptual development
- application of critical social science to the examination of key issues in economy and society
- long-term commitment to interdisciplinary and multi-method empirical research
- emphasis on international comparative research
- long-standing engagement with policy debates and practical applications of high quality academic research
Through investment in outstanding researchers, we continue to support areas of key strengths, such as public management, critical and interdisciplinary accounting, critical management studies and employment relations.
We have made senior appointments in corporate finance, CSR, international management, operational research and supply chain sustainability.
Looking to the future, our academics will be playing an integral role in the development of the world’s first Social Science Research Park, a £30 million investment in the social sciences.
Exploring how local authorities deliver services and whether their size will be relevant in the future.
